Vermiculture at Malpi International School

Vermiculture, the process of using earthworms to convert organic waste into fertilizer—referred to as vermicompost—was initiated at Malpi International School through the vision of our former Principal, Mr. John Bagul. One day, he approached me with the idea of starting a vermicomposting program using the kitchen waste from the school. I confirmed it was feasible, and from that moment, we embarked on the journey of vermicomposting.

I began by sourcing tiger worms and sawdust from Kathmandu. To create a simple composting setup, I used a flat bucket with small drainage holes at the bottom to release excess water. Materials like a gunny bag for covering, cardboard, newspapers, and waste vegetables were gathered from the school. Students in the Ecology class were taught the entire vermicomposting process.

Currently, Grade 10 students from the Students in Action (SIA) program have integrated vermicomposting into their project and are managing its upkeep. As they prepare to graduate, they are in the process of passing down this responsibility to their juniors, ensuring the continuity of the initiative.
